to download a pdf of it. Also you can read an artist statement for the work by visiting my website at www.andrewhershey.com or following this link It will be at RNG Gallery here in Omaha featuring Rachel Ziegler, Matt Lowe, Jeremy Stern, Natalie Linstrom and of course me. It should be an awesome show with an opening on April 5, 6-10pm. I'll be showing similar work that was at Big Orbit Gallery and Curated Culture, but I'm thinking of adding a few twists to it. Stop by the opening or looking for an upcoming post with some pictures. Then the weekend following this opening I'll be in a 2 person show on the other side of Omaha. I'm a little worried that it'll be to soon to have 2 shows in the same city, but sometimes you got to take opportunities when they come and it will be different work. Look out for more information on that.

House Surprises!

Oh Boy! House fun. So after a week and a half of living in the new place, we've already had our first house guest and 2 repairs. The furnace crapped out and stopped lighting, right after Dan left. They were able to fix that fairly easily. Then that night 1 of the new pipes in the bathroom came about at a joint! Thank goodness we were there at the time to shut of the water right away. Mark had just finished a shower when I noticed water pooling on the floor and then we heard gushing water from the first floor! As a ran to the basement to shut of the water it looked like it was raining in the freshly painted kitchen with an inch of water pooling on the freshly refinished wood floors.

We were able to soak up most of the water right away and tore out the ceiling to allow all the beams to dry. Hopefully we won't get any mold going in there. So our contractor has been working (Slooowly) on fixing everything. I think the joint in the pipe just didn't get glued right and it took it a week of use to come apart. Anyway so we're back to plastic on everything , a mess everywhere and the stove in the dining room! I guess nobody said home ownership would be easy. Well actually everyone said it was hard work.

I'm looking forward to having everything put back together, to cook a meal in my own house and not have to trip over any damn plastic tarps.

Moved in February

After many months of waiting and working we finally moved in to our place at the end of February. The following week we had a friend visit us from St. Louis. Of Course we'd planned on him coming to visit for months and we thought we'd be moved in sometime in December. Oh well at least we got in to the house before he made it to Omaha. And good friends don't care to much about moving boxes filling the place.

Here are 3 pictures 2 of the living room and the yellow on the walls. Originally we wanted a color that would set of the woodwork. This color does that, but it wasn't quite what we had in mind. It's a little jarring in an empty room, but with some things in the room it looks okay. the other picture is the dining room in dark brown and light blue for the ceiling. It'll be fun to work on fill and decorating the rooms.

The Bathroom is even closer to being done.

At this point we are still waiting on the custom sized shower door to come in. And then getting it installed. Then we need to paint everything, but that's the easy part, and clean up the beat up old door that comes into the bathroom. And with that I think the bathroom will finally be done. So, what our contractor said would be a 3 week project should finally, by the end of the month, be done after 4 months! Well I guess he's done a good job, but my goodness....

Take a look at some of the older pictures and just try to picture: that the old bathroom had plastic mint green tile on the walls and only 12 inches of space between the sink and the bathtub to squeeze through on your way to the toilet/cupboards.

More Bathroom pictures

I'm sure you've all been dying to know more about how the house project is going. It's pretty awesome and features loads of great letterpress and silkscreen cards and gifts. The gallery has had 2 shows so far, one featuring Tugboat Presents' Joey Lynch who does mostly silkscreen prints and the newest show features art by women. I haven't been to see this show yet but the list of names is impressive. Things have been crazy busy. We're still working on our house. The bathroom is almost done. We have the living room and the dining room done and currently the hardwood floors are being redone. So it looks like if all goes well we'll be in the place FINALLY by the end of January. Of course the house won't be done by any means but at least we'll be able to call it home. <sigh> I really can't wait!!

Here are 2 pictures from my recent show in Buffalo, NY at Big Orbit gallery. It was a wonderful occasion to reconnect and revisit a place we had spent two years of our lives. I still miss Buffalo a little and it was fun to see it again. Their wedding was held in an old Greek Orthodox church which has been converted into a manuscript library. It was a beautiful place for a wedding and perfect for a small intimate gathering. Here are a few pictures of the occasion.

Books, boobs and dinks

I just thought this was funny, crocheted naughty bits! I'm kind of excited because Susan White who I posted a blog about earlier was selected to show her work for next year's schedule. We are really close to placing an offer on the house shown on the July 23 blog posting. Mark and I found a loan that lets one take out additional money to do home improvements before you moving. This would be great to get started on some of the projects like the bathroom and the wiring. Things that are needed immediately, but we just don't have money to do no matter how cheap the house is. Anyway the bank is working on approving the loan. But we are down to the wire as the Seller wants an offer by tomorrow otherwise they are taking it off the market, because they have someone who's willing to rent it.

It's a little nerve racking. I suppose I'm still a little anxious about buying a house and the quickness needed isn't giving me enough time to get used to the idea, the commitment, the PAYMENT! <eep></eep>

Simpsons

In case you were curious and I know you were, here's what I'd look like if I were turned into a Simpson.

Another Home

This weekend Mark and I took another couple of looks at this home. Even took my parents through it. It has some good things going for it. It was built in the 1880s has nice character and a promising layout. It is oozing with potential, but it needs to have pretty much everything updated: a/c, furnace, plumbing, wiring, water heater, and the bathroom. My dad walked into the bathroom and the toilet totatlly tilted forward, due to the buckling, rotten floor. I think we're most excited about the possibilities, but it looks like so much work and we have very little money to get started with. Take a look at some of the pics though.

Yet another website

The latest website I'm working on is www.bemiscenterartauction.org for our yearly auction fundraiser. This one was so cute! It has 4 bedrooms and has been entirely updated. Fresh paint, newish roof, heater, A/C, etc. It was built in the 1910s so it has lots of character and woodwork. It's across the street from the yoga studio and down the alley from the ice cream stand, how cool is that? But it's a block off a busy street, no garage, and the yard is really small. My mom keeps proclaiming that it's just crazily over priced. <sigh> I don't know if that's true but it might be at the very upper edge of our price range.</sigh>

Dome House

Mark and I have been looking for houses in Omaha and dreaming of our own little place. I don't know, does anyone who sells stuff through the internet have any suggestions?

Hitchcock Nature Area Iowa

Thule and I went hiking this weekend at the Hitchcock Nature Area a county park near here in Iowa. Absolutely beautiful rolling hills. Actually it's in the Loess Hills, which is the dust that has blown off the Rocky Mountains and collected in Western Iowa for thousands of years. Anyway it creates these rugged type hills that are really interesting to look at and surprisingly steep. I'm thinking it'll be really beautiful in the fall and perfect for snowshoeing in the winter. Not that we get much snow here, but still. . .

Antony Gormley recently opened a new exhibition in London at the Hayward Gallery. One of the pieces in the show is, Blind Light, a glass room filled with a glowing white cloud. You have to check out the website for the exhibition at http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/gormley/light.html where you can see videos of people walking through it. It looks absolutely beautiful! Wish I could make a trip to London this summer to see it in person. In addition to Blind Light is Event Horizon in which the artist installed numerous figures on the building rooftops throughout London. I think it would be eerie to be walking around the city with these "people" looking down on you. Would it feel like protection or surveillance?

"Immigrants" Printmakers from the Funen Workshop

The new exhibition at the Bemis Center is an intense printmaking show featuring the work of artists working at the Funen Workshop in Denmark. The project had local children take photos of what Omaha meant to them. This resulted in 4000 photos and I then incorporated all of them into a giant 80 foot long mural of the city skyline. The full mural is 11 panels long with the tallest one being about 8 feet tall. An absolutely amazing show! He had this phonograph with a double trumpet set up on stage. It was an interest object to look at through the opening act. I thought it was just a cool stage prop, but then when Andrew started playing you realized it wasn't just for show. He would load loops of sound into it and then it would start spinning. Giving the music a unique warbling sound. It gave you the feeling of being a kid on a tilt-a-whirl, spinning so fast that you could only catch bits of sound from the world beyond the ride.

The most amazing song he did was his encore, which you can listen to in this YouTube video, called "why?". It's just him playing and layering loops of sound. He gets really intense. Awesome!

This is another good one.

Somewhere in the Middle of America

Lately I've been working my way through a book called As Eve Said to the Serpent: On Landscape, Gender, and Art by Rebecca Solnit. This Earth Day I thought I'd post a section I found interesting:

"America's identity lies in its open spaces, the space of possibility, but also of speed, movement, and unobstructed will. A truly American identity emerged only with the invasion of the 'Great American Desert.' Before the credo of manifest destiny, the non-European spaces of the prairies were perceived as threatening -- not merely physically threatening to those Euro-Americans from east of the Mississippi used to an abundance of water and trees, but threatening to the vision of America as a true second Europe, sharing its scale, social relations, and agriculture basis. The prairies and spaces further west demanded a different way of life, spread people farther apart for survival, taught them a different grammar of scale that still survives in the desert. And pre-manifest destiny America sees such space as breeding hordes and nomads, as undoing the rootedness of European culture.

And so the questions raised have never been answered. Yet the different quality of space seems to have bred a different character, what is now known worldwide as the American character, one more belligerent, more ferocious, and less rooted in place and memory than true settlers, a character generated out of the unchecked willfulness such vast expanses permitted people living not in the collective unit of the nomad but in the singularity of the apotheosized individual: room to swing your arms. The impediments have grown, but the will has not grown accustomed to them, and so violence continues. . ."

Living in Nebraska, in one of the plains states, I found this bit interesting. I think she points out an important feature of America which so often forgotten has had a profound impact on our culture. The vast open space of the prairies have given us a false sense of unending abundance. They've helped create our individualist consumerist society. Our cultural identity is in part defined by the vast possibilities of the plains, but how will it change after the plains are filled? What happens when we begin to run out of things: oil, trees, clean water etc.?

Happy Earth Day everyone.

Isaac Tobin

I found a website called Book by Its Cover, which led me to the work of Isaac Tobin. He's a designer from Chicago but also makes exquisite sketchbooks. I love the layering of found materials and use of painting, drawing, even sewing. He approaches his sketchbook as almost a work of art in itself. I always seem to use mine more for notes, which tends to look pretty boring. Enjoy some images of his work.

Jeff Wall - Photo at the MOMA

I was browsing the MOMA website and stumbled on a Jeff Wall exhibit of photographs. For $80 one could be told how to "fix" themselves or someone else in 5 hours or less. The Omaha Weekly Reader wrote a great article about the conference which you can read by clicking here. In the article they point out that no one who proclaims to have been changed by an ex-gay ministry isn't being paid to do so. The conference features many ex-gay people who witness about being gay and how the ministry "saved" them. Of course one must realize that their job is to make such claims.

The Reader in their research points out that (as one would suspect) the conference doesn't draw many gay or lesbian people. (Unless of course they're protesting.) It appeals mostly to conservative family or friends of people who are gay. They attend in the hopes of learning how to "cure" their loved one. I can't imagine how harmful this must be to a relationship. "I think you're broken let me fix you." Why stir up and condone intolerance like that?

How about a conference instead, on appreciating diversity and accepting those that are different from you. I certainly doubt that an attendee of a conservative evangelical church would like to be told that their religion is wrong. Our community must learn to accept difference among it's citizens if it is going to continue to grow and have any hope of being more than an afterthought on the national stage.

Omaha, oh Yeah!

Omaha is on the plains and it used to be the epitome of the bland and boring. The patience required to do this must be imense. Of her work Rachel says: "The process involved to create this body of work has become an important exercise. The repetitive mark making and the measuring of evaporating water forces me to be acutely aware of the present moment. I was thinking about the SGC panel full of young people who had started businesses of their own and seemed to be doing well or at least were having a great time. I've always thought that I'd love to start an art center of some kind. Possibly a community print shop, I've noticed that Omaha is definitely lacking in that area. Or my partner is in to floral design and wants to own a flower shop. I was thinking what a great melding. We could start a joint business, he could do flowers/events I could design and print invitations/posters etc. Could do a combination of silkscreen and or letterpress. Of course the letterpress would have to be digitally created plates, because as much as I love type I don't want to deal with the space/weight/organization of it. I've really been thinking about this after seeing the work of Hammer Press and The Small Stakes. So how does one get started? I know they say start small but when you barely have enough room/money to live it seems like a huge under taking to create artwork.

I was talking to a friend recently that was saying how much potential there is in Omaha right now. It's small enough and midwest enough that there aren't that many arts related venues. And city is currently revitalizing the north of downtown area, which at the moment is a patch of old vacant brick warehouse. But soon will be a vibrant part of town. Saddle Creek records and Film Streams is building a new music/film venue there. This could be the Omaha arts district.

Electric Cars

So Yesterday my partner and I went to one of the local churches in Omaha that was celebrating Earth Day by showing environmental movies all month long. We saw Who Killed the Electric Car which was a movie I had been wanting to see. It was fun to see it in the company of like minded people. The movie itself was frustrating to watch the stumbling incompetence of the american corporation.

GM had produce a beloved forward thinking car that was years ahead of others in the industry. It even made foreign car makers nervous. Then they destroyed it in favor of the Hummer. The idea being that consumers were already happy to buy gas powered cars, and huge ones at that, why bother them with something new. Seems like even though that was true you should still diversify your product to meet the demands of green people and get ready for the future. Toyota did that and they were hugely successful. They still make huge SUVs and Trucks but just because they made one mass market hybrid people think they are great and environmentally friendly.

I am really excited about this new Chevy Volt concept. It sounds like a great idea, an electric car that plugs in but basically has a small gas generator on board to extend your range. On days you only drive to work and back you have plenty of energy from the battery, but on days with longer treks you can still use the car. I hope they actually make the car and not just talk about it. It looks a little racy for me and I feel slightly guilty as I'm really a VW person, but VW isn't even talking about electric cars let alone making them. You can go to Chevrolet's website and voice your opinion about whether or not GM should build the Volt.

I'd Rather be Drawing

These images are from the exhibition I'd Rather be Drawing which was part of the Southern Graphics Conference this year in Kansas City. Below are some of the works I was most interested in. The space was awesome after we finally found it.

This work was done by Michael Kruger this year he was all over the conference from shows to sitting on numerous panels. I love the quarkiness of this work and yet it makes me think of suburban sprawl...What happens when every place is the same?

John Brown's work incorporates doodles upon doodles. Each figure in this is cut out and glued down to the larger canvas creating this textured layered work.

Randy Bolton's new body of work is poignant and touching. The image is burned into the handmade paper using a wood burning tool. He's still using the drawing style of the 1950s kid's book illustration, but with this new drawing technique it creates a contrast I think is brilliant.

Another Breathtaking Printmaker

Jennifer Ghormley is another printmaker who was at SGC this year.
